Anne Donovan (born November 1, 1961) is a former professional basketball player from the United States who is currently a women’s basketball coach. She is now the head coach of the Connecticut Sun, a professional basketball team. Donovan earned a national title with Old Dominion University throughout her playing career, as well as two Olympic gold medals and three appearances in the Final Four. In 1995, she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. A professional basketball coach, she led the Seattle Storm to their first WNBA championship in 2004, making her the first female coach of a championship team in the league’s history (as well as the youngest person to coach a WNBA champion, at age 42).
She has the distinction of being the only person to have both played for and coached a team to a national women’s collegiate championship victory. Donovan began her coaching career with the Indiana Fever and the Charlotte Sting before joining the New York Liberty as an assistant coach in the spring of 200She was named interim head coach of the Liberty on July 31, 2009, after previously serving as the team’s assistant coach. She accepted the job of head women’s basketball coach at Seton Hall University on March 29, 2010, but she remained with the Liberty for the remainder of the 2010 season. In January 2013, she resigned from her role as head coach at Seton Hall and took a position with the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun. Donovan was also the head coach of the United States Women’s Basketball team that won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
